What you'll learn

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Be aware of the health and safety hazards and controls for the most common types of welding and cutting.
  • Understand the legal requirements for health and safety.
  • Know what is required for a welding or cutting risk assessment.
  • Understand how the risks to health and safety from welding and cutting are controlled and your role in this.

  • Suitable for

Module 1: Introduction to Welding Health and Safety

Definitions, gas welding and cutting, electric arc welding, health and safety hazards, health and safety legislation for welding and cutting operations, legal enforcement, HSE Safety Alert February 2019, and employee duties.

Module 2: Risk Assessment

What is a risk assessment?, who should carry out a risk assessment?, identify the hazards, decide who might be harmed and how, evaluate the risks, evaluate existing controls, the hierarchy of control, HSE guidance, record your findings and implement them, and review and update.

Module 3: Health Risks and Controls During Welding and Cutting

Controlling welding fume exposure, HSE Safety Alert, engineering controls and RPE, local exhaust ventilation (LEV), positioning an LEV hood, safety data sheets (SDSs), hazard labelling and packaging, selection and use of RPE, personal protective equipment (PPE), checking and maintaining LEV and RPE, noise exposure, vibration exposure, manual handling, and health surveillance.

Module 4: Safety Risks and Controls During Welding and Cutting

Fire and smoke risks, hot work on tanks and drums, permit to work, compressed gasses, welding in confined spaces, electrical hazards, duties on manufacturers, importers or distributors, stray welding currents, safe use and maintenance of welding equipment, welding checks, slips, trips and falls, eye protection, training, communication and housekeeping, and emergency procedures.

The online assessment is taken on completion of the training material. You will be asked 20 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked automatically so you will instantly know whether you have passed. If you don't pass don't worry! You can take the test as many times as you need with no extra charge.

This Welding Health and Safety training course is suitable for anyone who uses welding and cutting operations in their work, specifically metal-to-metal welding activities, such as gas, electric, arc, MIG and TIG welding.

The course is well-suited for managers, supervisors, and team leaders who are responsible for carrying out a risk assessment, but the level of information covered is appropriate for workers at all levels.
