In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, it\u2019s illegal to refuse any reasonable request, such as proofreading software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Managers should also be perceptive to how employees get on with tasks.<\/strong> If team members appear to struggle with an element of their job and you suspect it could be linked to dyslexia, you can make reasonable accommodations to help with those challenges, such as assistive software. Be careful not to make assumptions though; always talk to the person about their struggles first and see what they&#8217;d like to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Most adjustments are very affordable and easy to implement<\/strong>. Simple adjustments are well-worth the investment if they enable employees with dyslexia to work to their full capacity. Tasks that require little to no effort for some people \u2013 such as writing emails or following instructions \u2013 can be complex, anxiety-inducing processes for those with dyslexia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most prominent and well known effects of dyslexia is a weakness in literacy skills. However, that isn&#8217;t the only thing to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dyslexia often affects a person&#8217;s <strong>memory<\/strong>, ability to process, store, and recall information, and their organisational skills or awareness of time.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/worker-on-laptop.png\" alt=\"worker on a laptop in an office\" class=\"wp-image-12241\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-common-difficulties-caused-by-dyslexia-include\">Common difficulties caused by dyslexia include:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reading and writing typical forms of information and communication.<\/strong> For example: emails, information sheets and documents, letters, website pages, chats, reports, etc. Proofreading and word processing software alleviates the stress posed by these tasks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tasks that involve numerical data.<\/strong> Dyslexia affects numeracy skills as well as literacy. Access to a physical calculator is beneficial.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Learning and recalling factual information.<\/strong> This is especially true if information is in text form only. Reminder systems and records reduce reliance on long-term memory storage, and text-to-speech software and features on word processing software help with processing information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Meeting deadlines and managing time.<\/strong> Many people with dyslexia struggle to tell and track time, which leads to difficulty with time management. Likewise, challenges with information processing can slow project completion. The right software and access to reminder systems help alleviate these challenges greatly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Following complex instructions.<\/strong> Instructions that are too detailed or given out of order can be overwhelming and a challenge to follow. Give instructions verbally and in written form to assist with information processing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other difficulties include <strong>difficulty with concentrating<\/strong>, <strong>problems with<\/strong> <strong>verbal communication<\/strong>, and <strong>visual stress<\/strong> (when text appears distorted or \u2018moves\u2019).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because these challenges are not visually apparent \u2013 making dyslexia a \u2018hidden\u2019 disability \u2013 they\u2019re easy to overlook. Unfortunately, they are sometimes chalked up as laziness or inability, neither of which are accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>People with dyslexia simply need tools and strategies that are suited to the way their brain works to deliver their best work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also crucial to note that many people with dyslexia develop their own coping strategies during adolescence and continue crafting strategies way into adulthood. Reading job applications, completing technical tests, filling out applications and maintaining concentration levels can presents difficulty for some.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/interview-workplace-recruitment.png\" alt=\"interview workplace recruitment\" class=\"wp-image-12242\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The phrasing and terminology used in your recruitment ads and interview process make a significant difference to who applies and the candidate\u2019s performance in the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are numerous ways businesses can accommodate the needs of people with dyslexia when putting together job advertisements and interview processes \u2013 and in turn prevent dyslexia discrimination in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-to-create-dyslexia-friendly-job-adverts-you-can\">To create dyslexia-friendly job adverts, you can:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider providing an <strong>audio or video version of job adverts<\/strong> in addition to written ones. Having an alternate format reflects positively on the business and attracts a range of skill sets. It is both inclusive and creative, which may also make your advert stand out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write job adverts and interview materials in <strong>plain English<\/strong> \u2013 avoid jargon and complex sentences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make use of <strong>short paragraphs and bullet points<\/strong> to divide up the text on job adverts and interview materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/dyslexia-discrimination-girl-on-laptop.jpg\" alt=\"girl doing job application on laptop\" class=\"wp-image-12243\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-to-avoid-dyslexia-discrimination-during-interviews-you-can\">To avoid dyslexia discrimination during interviews, you can:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep interview questions <strong>brief<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>visual aids<\/strong> for interview presentations and materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep <strong>interview presentations reasonably short and concise<\/strong>, and provide plenty of pauses and opportunity for interviewees to absorb the information and ask questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/writing-on-computer.png\" alt=\"writing on computer\" class=\"wp-image-12244\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-to-avoid-dyslexia-discrimination-during-technical-tests-you-can\">To avoid dyslexia discrimination during technical tests, you can:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide <strong>assistive options<\/strong>. Enable <strong>spelling and grammar checking<\/strong> by allowing access to the internet or by installing suitable <strong>word-processing software<\/strong>, e.g. Microsoft Office or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammarly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Grammarly<\/a>. Provide a dictionary for offline tests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Word processing software, such as Microsoft Office, is also especially beneficial because you can <strong>alter the colour of the page<\/strong> through the design menu. Changing the background colour can help people with dyslexia read text easier, as black text against a white background aggravates visual stress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set a <strong>dyslexic-friendly font<\/strong> to default on word-processing software. Examples of standard fonts include Arial and Tahoma.&nbsp;<strong>Specially-designed fonts for dyslexia<\/strong> that you can download for free or purchase include Sassoon, APhont and Read Regular.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install suitable <strong>text-to-speech software<\/strong> on computers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow <strong>plenty of time<\/strong> for the completion of technical tests \u2013 if a person reveals they are dyslexic, give them extra time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The exception to the above points is when the candidate is required to proof without tools, e.g. a book editor. In this situation it is a <strong>genuine occupational qualification<\/strong> to require someone without literacy difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a candidate takes the test with all the adjustments provided and still falls short of the business\u2019 required standards, it\u2019s acceptable to decide they are not suitable for the role. But if no support was provided and you refuse them the job, then you have inadvertently discriminated against their disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"discriminationworkplace\"><a href=\"#backtotop\"><em>Back to Top<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-preventing-discrimination-in-the-workplace\">Preventing Discrimination in the Workplace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Methods and tools for preventing dyslexia discrimination are very cost-effective and easy to integrate into the business. They help effectively remove barriers and create a fairer work environment for people with dyslexia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accommodations should be implemented proactively, i.e. without prompt, but also reactively if a person with dyslexia does request assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managers should liaise with employees to determine what specific areas they struggle with, as no two people with (and even without) dyslexia are identical. They can work to implement adjustments that cater to the individual needs of the person with dyslexia. In fact, many accommodations can benefit other employees too, so are a valuable investment for the whole team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-try-implementing-these-accommodations\">Try implementing these accommodations:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Install <strong>Microsoft Office and Grammarly<\/strong> on all users\u2019 computers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install <strong>dyslexia-friendly fonts<\/strong> e.g. Open Dyslexic and set them to default on word-processing software and browsers etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install<strong> text-to-audio software<\/strong> on all computers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide <strong>practical training<\/strong> where possible; hands-on learning is often more effective than written instructions for people with dyslexia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assign someone else to take <strong>meeting minutes<\/strong> (unless they want to, of course!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage <strong>regular breaks<\/strong> to relieve eye strain from computers \u2013 breaks are beneficial&nbsp;to all employees using display screens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ways-to-adapt-documents-and-instructions-for-employees-with-dyslexia\">Ways to adapt documents and instructions for employees with dyslexia:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Provide both verbal and written instructions.<\/strong> These shouldn\u2019t be convoluted or excessive. Encourage employees to ask questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlight key points in documents\/emails and <strong>use bolding.<\/strong> Try to avoid underlining, italics or block capitals as this can distort the traditional shape of letters and make the text \u2018run together\u2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Print and write information for people with dyslexia on coloured paper.<\/strong> Use cream or a soft pastel colour; some people with dyslexia have colour preferences such as blue or green. Also, make sure the paper is not transparent or opaque.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discuss key points of documents verbally.<\/strong> This can help with absorbing meaning; employees will gain a stronger grasp of what it\u2019s about beforehand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Makes use of visual aids.<\/strong> Diagrams, drawings, and flowcharts on documents break up the text and provide further clarity for those with dyslexia, making the information easier to process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Colour-paper-notes.png\" alt=\"Colour paper notes\" class=\"wp-image-12263\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-adapting-verbal-communication-for-employees-with-dyslexia\">Adapting verbal communication for employees with dyslexia:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Speak clearly and in plain English.<\/strong> Avoid using jargon, speaking too quickly, and going off on tangents. Utilise pauses so you and the listener have a moment to collect thoughts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep meetings succinct.<\/strong> Try to avoid letting them run for longer than&nbsp;is necessary; stick to the point. Ensure a colleague takes minutes that are shared after the meeting, in case any key points are missed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communicate in a logical order.<\/strong> Particularly when giving instructions, provide them one at a time and sequentially. Give the listener&nbsp;opportunity to ask questions and double check instructions if there\u2019s ever any uncertainty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be understanding and patient during discussions.<\/strong> Some people with dyslexia \u2013 and even people without dyslexia \u2013 lack verbal fluency or volume control, making conversations difficult. Don\u2019t interrupt people when they talk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/whiteboard-meeting-diagrams.png\" alt=\"whiteboard meeting diagrams\" class=\"wp-image-12246\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-time-management-organisation-considerations-for-employees-with-dyslexia\">Time management &amp; organisation considerations for employees with dyslexia:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Offer a private or quiet work space.<\/strong> Some people with dyslexia may have difficulty working around others or excessive noise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Remind them of important deadlines.<\/strong> Timekeeping is difficult for some people with dyslexia, so a gentle reminder every now and then will be appreciated.
