{"id":2306,"date":"2022-11-16T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T09:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/?p=2306"},"modified":"2026-02-09T15:38:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T15:38:15","slug":"classroom-equality-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/classroom-equality-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Promote Equality, Diversity &#038; Inclusion in the Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&amp;I) in the classroom and beyond should be a cornerstone of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/what-is-effective-teaching\/\">effective teaching<\/a> practice and a leadership priority. All children are entitled to a high-quality education in a nurturing and inclusive environment, where all can thrive, make progress and fulfil their potential.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making sure that settings meet their equality, diversity and inclusion responsibilities is also a key element of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework. It impacts all areas of key judgement applied to schools <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quality of education, behaviour and attitude, personal development and leadership and management) &#8211; as detailed in their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/821069\/Education_inspection_framework_-_equality__diversity_and_inclusion_statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ED&amp;I statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we will consider what equality, diversity and inclusion means, the legal requirements for schools relating to it, and provide some strategies to promote ED&amp;I, at both a whole-school and classroom level.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19472\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Classroom.jpg\" alt=\"classroom equality and diversity\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What is Equality, Diversity and Inclusion?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst equality, diversity and inclusion are closely related, and often discussed as a single concept, it is useful to consider the individual terms and their meanings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Equality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; means that everyone is treated the same, is treated fairly and has the same opportunities. <\/span><b>Equity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is slightly different from equality in that it recognises that each person has different circumstances. This means that varying types or levels of support might be required, depending on individual need, to take full advantage of equal opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diversity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; means recognising, respecting and welcoming everyone\u2019s different backgrounds, identities and experiences. Promoting diversity celebrates people\u2019s differences and uniqueness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inclusion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; means that everyone is encouraged to retain their uniqueness, they aren\u2019t singled out for being different, and have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/sense-of-belonging-in-school\/\">sense of belonging<\/a> and being valued.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"block-quote\">\n<div class=\"block-quote-content\"><i class=\"fas fa-quote-left\"><\/i>Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.<\/div>\n<p class=\"quote-citation\">Verna Myers<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusion importantly<\/span><b> goes a step further than diversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Promoting diversity is sometimes criticised as a tick-box exercise, often driven by data. For example, a school could claim to be \u2018diverse\u2019 based on numbers of pupils and staff who meet a certain criteria. Not only is it a legal requirement, but every member of the school&#8217;s community is entitled to a learning and working environment where they can thrive together and celebrate their uniqueness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The Equality Act 2010<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Equality Act brought together a range of anti-discriminatory laws, and covers all of Great Britain. It offers protection from discrimination, harassment and victimisation for nine specific personal characteristics &#8211; known as protected characteristics under the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64240 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/study-group.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Protected Characteristics<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protected characteristics are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Age.<\/li>\n<li>Disability.<\/li>\n<li>Gender reassignment.<\/li>\n<li>Marriage and civil partnership.<\/li>\n<li>Pregnancy and maternity.<\/li>\n<li>Race.<\/li>\n<li>Religion or belief.<\/li>\n<li>Sex.<\/li>\n<li>Sexual orientation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Act makes it <\/span><b>unlawful for a school to discriminate against, harass or victimise a pupil or potential pupil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In relation to admissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the way that it provides education for pupils.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the way that it provides pupils access to any benefit, facility or service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By excluding a pupil or subjecting them to any other detriment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Equality Act also protects those discriminated against through <\/span><b>association<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span><b> perception <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; for example, a pupil discriminated against due to a parent\u2019s religious belief or due being perceived as LGBTQ+.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Positive Action<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools should carefully consider how they are supporting their pupils and students with regard to particular protected characteristics. Provisions within the Act allow schools and colleges to take <\/span><b>proportionate, positive action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to deal with particular disadvantages affecting students with a particular protected characteristic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes a duty to make <\/span><b>reasonable adjustments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for disabled children and young people (including those with long-term conditions). Positive action could also include providing support for a group of students who share a protected characteristic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64235 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Inclusion-in-letter-cubes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>The Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED)<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State-funded schools and colleges are subject to <\/span><b>The Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found in the Equality Act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PSED means that schools and colleges have a duty to:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation (and any other conduct prohibited under the Equality Act).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between those who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PSED helps schools and colleges to focus on key issues of concern and improving pupil and student outcomes. Keeping Children Safe In Education (KSCIE) guidance stresses the importance of obligations under the PSED in relation to safeguarding &#8211; reminding settings to be mindful that some pupils or students may be more at risk of harm from specific issues such as sexual violence, homophobic, biphobic or transphobic bullying or racial discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can access the Equality Act 2010 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2010\/15\/part\/2\/chapter\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DfE guidance, The Equality Act 2010 and Schools, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/315587\/Equality_Act_Advice_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a> and our article, Keeping Children Safe in Education: Key Changes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/keeping-children-safe-in-education-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Intersectionality<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term intersectionality refers to possessing multiple characteristics, which often overlap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intersectionality is about having a mix of identities and how these might combine to create different types of discrimination or privilege, and it&#8217;s important to consider when looking to promote equality and inclusion for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with intersectional identities can be more vulnerable to discrimination, and may experience discrimination differently. For example, a Muslim pupil who is bisexual may face different issues to a bisexual pupil with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>How Can Equality Be Promoted at School?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we have seen, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion should be a clear priority within schools and should be something that all children are familiar with from an early age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at a Whole-School Level<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An ethos of, and true commitment to, equality, diversity and inclusion should be embedded in the school culture, and a core part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/how-to-create-a-positive-learning-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating a positive learning environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This should include:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Setting clear expectations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a school\u2019s policies and procedures (including behaviour policies, anti-bullying policies, staff code of conduct, etc.) should clearly state the expectation that everyone is to be treated fairly and equitably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Challenging negative attitudes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the school should have a clear policy with regards to discriminatory behaviour and language. This should never be dismissed as banter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64238 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/A-child-being-taunted.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Support strategies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; there should be strategies in place to encourage anyone to come forward if they are experiencing or witnessing anything that violates the school\u2019s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Creating an inclusive culture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; including whole school representations of diversity can be a powerful tool to promote inclusion. This can be done in a multitude of ways &#8211; from the images and posters used around school, to the religious and cultural events that are recognised, to the uniform policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awareness weeks and days can aid this but care should be taken that the implication is not of a short-lived nod to diversity rather than embedding true inclusivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Providing effective training<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; all staff should be trained in equality and diversity. This could include explicit Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training, but also training that illustrates how important inclusion is for all aspect of education, including provision for Special Educational Needs and\/Disability, safeguarding topics such as Harmful Sexual Behaviour and Preventing Radicalisation and Extremism, and Mental Health and Wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reflecting inclusion in the curriculum &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploration of topics such as celebrating difference, recognising and avoiding stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination form key parts of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/national-curriculum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many statutory programmes of study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at all key stages &#8211; most notably relationships education, sex and relationships education, and health education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spiral curriculum where these topics are returned to, and built upon, over the course of a school career means that children\u2019s understanding will deepen and develop over time. So, in Year 1, a topic might look at what makes us special, building to sophisticated debate regarding challenging discriminatory language online in Year 12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as explicitly teaching these topics, schools can go further by ensuring <\/span><b>representation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of diversity across the wider curriculum. It is incredibly important that children and young people <\/span><b>see themselves and their experiences reflected positively in the texts and resources they encounter.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64237 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/A-family-looking-at-a-tablet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure English texts include a diverse range of characters &#8211; including those from different cultures and ethnic groups, different family groupings, characters with disabilities, LGBTQ+ characters, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In history, music, art and PE include a focus on key figures who represent diversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Seeking out feedback &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is not enough to implement inclusive strategies, you need to actually make sure that pupils and staff feel included. Use pupil voice or staff surveys, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/what-is-a-school-council\/\">school councils<\/a>, peer support groups, etc., to regularly check in to see if staff and students feel that the setting is meeting their needs in terms of inclusivity. Use those opportunities to welcome suggestions as to what more could be done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Promoting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at a Classroom Level<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Against a backdrop of an inclusive whole-school culture, there is a great deal that can be done to promote inclusion at a class or lesson level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Think about representation in the resources<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the resources you use reflect diversity. Try to evaluate the resources that you have through an inclusion lens and then aim to further improve inclusivity. This could include anything from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stories shared with learners &#8211; are they representative of a range of identities, circumstances and cultures?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dolls\/small world toys &#8211; do they reinforce gender stereotypes? Are a range of skin colours represented?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colouring equipment &#8211; do you provide a range of skin tones for children to use?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maths\/science problems &#8211; for example, if you are writing maths problems, make sure you reflect diversity in the pronouns, names and scenarios which feature.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can make use of advice regarding inclusive resources from organisations such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktrust.org.uk\/booklists\/bookstart\/finding-inclusive-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book Trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonewall.org.uk\/best-practice-toolkits-and-resources-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stonewall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even relatively small, simple tweaks can improve the inclusivity of your resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19474 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Teaching.jpg\" alt=\"teaching equality and diversity\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Adapt your practice<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SEND Code of Practice <\/span><b>requires all teachers to differentiate and personalise teaching and learning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to meet the needs of children and young people with special educational needs and\/or disabilities. Good teaching practice should include using a variety of teaching and assessment methods, as well as accessible resources to ensure<\/span><b> all pupils<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can access the learning opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This should be driven by the actual needs of the individual learner. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/supporting-pupils-with-sen-in-the-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting pupils with SEND<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might include strategies such as rephrasing questions, considering sensory needs when organising classroom spaces, building movement breaks into your lessons, and providing materials in a variety of different formats to suit different learners\u2019 needs, to name but a few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our training course, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/courses\/education\/special-educational-needs-and-disabilities-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in the Classroom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looks at teaching in an inclusive way, in detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Celebrate the diversity of your students<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get to know your pupils and try to reflect their uniqueness. This could be as simple as having \u2018hello\u2019 written on the door in all the languages spoken in the class &#8211; or asking children to create class displays illustrating something unique about them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19481 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/teaching-a-language.jpg\" alt=\"language lesson\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Be mindful of your language<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important that teachers model inclusive language. Whilst staff would always avoid language they know to be offensive or unacceptable, sometimes we might not recognise the implications of certain phrases or terminology. Phrases which are considered \u2018everyday\u2019 may actually carry assumptions that exclude some individuals. By being mindful of the implications of your language in class, you can help to promote inclusivity.
