You can identify the hazards through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Workplace observations.<\/li>\n<li>Obtaining feedback from employees.<\/li>\n<li>Checking any manufacturer&#8217;s instructions for DSE equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Reviewing past ill health records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use our downloadable DSE work station assessment checklist above to help you identify the potential risks.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Risk Assessment Step 2: Deciding Who Might be Harmed and How<\/h4>\n<p>The second step in the risk assessment involves looking at each specific risk and then identifying the people who are likely to be harmed by them.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure that you consider every person involved in the work area where the hazard is present. For example, you may only have one user per workstation, or you may have several different people that use the DSE throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/office-computer-pc.jpg\" alt=\"office computer pc\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Risk Assessment Step 3: Evaluating the Risks<\/h4>\n<p>The next step in the risk assessment is to evaluate the risks that you have identified and decide whether they can be eliminated. If not, how can you control the risks so that harm is unlikely? You could consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introducing new or improved equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Re-organising work.<\/li>\n<li>Re-organising the workstation.<\/li>\n<li>Training staff to ensure they understand the risks and precautions to be taken.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Think about the control measures that you already have in place: are these sufficient? Do you need to improve them or introduce new control measures?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/DSE-checklist.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><button>DSE Work Station Assessment Checklist (Free Download PDF)<\/button><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Risk Assessment Step 4: Recording Your Findings and Implementing Them<\/h4>\n<p>It is recommended that you write down your findings from the risk assessment (where there are fewer than 5 employees, this is not required by law, but is still advisable).<\/p>\n<h4>You need to make a record to be able to show that:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>A proper check has been made.<\/li>\n<li>You have considered who is affected.<\/li>\n<li>You have dealt with all the significant hazards.<\/li>\n<li>The precautions are reasonable and the remaining risk is low.<\/li>\n<li>Staff or their representatives have been involved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use the DSE assessment template above to help contribute to your records of findings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Risk Assessment Step 5: Reviewing and Updating<\/h4>\n<p>You should check on a regular basis, such as every year, to see whether there have been any changes in your workplace that may affect your risk assessment. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are there any improvements still to be made?<\/li>\n<li>Has there been employee feedback?<\/li>\n<li>Have you learnt anything from the ill-health of employees?<\/li>\n<li>Has any new DSE equipment been introduced?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have any new employees that require training?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/record-keeping-RIDDOR-incidents-accident-book.jpg\" alt=\"incident and accident book risk assessment\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You should also be sure to update the risk assessment on an as-and-when basis to ensure it remains up-to-date.
