Without proper hand washing, this could easily lead to something harmful entering the body, spreading elsewhere, or causing cross-contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, hospitality workers may handle food that carries harmful pathogens, and without good hand hygiene these may spread to the food their customers eat. Staff in healthcare may work around patients who carry viruses and infections, and if they don\u2019t follow the correct hand washing procedure, they could accidentally pass these onto other patients. Even low risk environments, like offices, are at risk of germs moving between people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-following-hand-washing-facts-show-just-how-easily-hands-can-spread-bacteria\">The following hand washing facts show just how easily hands can spread bacteria:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Globally, <strong>only one in five people<\/strong> wash their hands after using the bathroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The average office worker\u2019s hands come into contact with <strong>10 million bacteria<\/strong> per day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/globalhandwashing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/GHP-Hygiene-in-HCFs-Fact-Sheet-Aug2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">61%<\/a> of healthcare professionals<\/strong> do not clean their hands correctly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around <strong>50% of hospital-acquired infections <\/strong>can be easily avoided through better hand hygiene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contaminated hands can transfer viruses to more than <strong>5 surfaces or 14 other objects. <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Damp hands spread <strong>1,000 times more bacteria<\/strong> than dry hands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bacteria can stay alive on hands for <strong>up to 3 hours. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, many people don\u2019t know how to properly wash their hands or don\u2019t make the necessary effort. In workplaces like catering, following proper hand washing procedures is a critical part of the business\u2019s food safety system, so there cannot be any room for error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why all staff must be reminded of the correct hand washing techniques they should use. A breakdown of each individual step for hand washing, as displayed on the poster, is shown in detail below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-7-steps-of-hand-washing\">What are the 7 Steps of Hand Washing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These 7 hand washing steps, as advised by the NHS, are effective and straightforward for thorough cleaning. The recommended hand washing time is at least <strong>20 seconds<\/strong>, so make sure you complete all the steps and don\u2019t rush through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-wet-hands\">Step 1: Wet Hands<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"686\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/HST_Hub_Step1Image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78169\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Wet your hands and apply enough liquid soap to create a good lather. The temperature of the water should be between 35\u00baC and 45\u00baC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-rub-palms-together\">Step 2: Rub Palms Together<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rub your hands palm to palm in circular motions. Rotate clockwise and anticlockwise.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"686\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/HST_Hub_Step2Image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78170\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-3-rub-the-back-of-hands\">Step 3: Rub the Back of Hands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With your fingers linked through the other hand, use your right palm to rub the back of your left hand. With your fingers interlocked, rub the backs of them against your palms. If yours does, make sure you do not touch any part of the hand dryer with your clean hands, as you will risk transferring bacteria back onto them. Likewise, you should never use a reusable towel to dry your hands, as they can harbour dangerous levels of bacteria that transfer back onto your hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"poster\">If your taps have a push and release or automatic feature, use this as instructed.
