It also acts as a trust signal for parents, carers, and guardians of children. They\u2019ll appreciate a thorough breakdown of everything the school does to keep children safe.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Children-in-a-school-classroom.jpg\" alt=\"Children in a school classroom\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This policy needs to be comprehensive and can therefore be time-consuming to produce. That&#8217;s why we\u2019ve worked together with a designated safeguarding lead to create a <strong>safeguarding policy template<\/strong>. You can use it in almost any school and adapt certain sections to your specific safeguarding measures where needed.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout this guide, you\u2019ll find a summary of what sections the policy template contains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Child-Protection-and-Safeguarding-Children-Policy-PDF-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><button>Free Example Safeguarding Policy for Schools<\/button><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What is a Safeguarding Children Policy?<\/h2>\n<p>A school safeguarding policy details <strong>all the procedures that everyone must follow<\/strong> to protect children\u2019s wellbeing. It is a vital document that all education settings must produce to demonstrate compliance with safeguarding statutory guidance, particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/keeping-children-safe-in-education-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keeping Children Safe in Education<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/safeguarding-children-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Working Together to Safeguard Children.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The scope of safeguarding is wide, as children are susceptible to more risks than ever before. Safeguarding policies in schools <strong>must consider all safeguarding risks<\/strong>, from abuse and neglect, through online safety and extremism, to FGM and child exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>Staff who work with children will receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/courses\/safeguarding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safeguarding training<\/a> that explains their duties for minimising risk, and <strong>the policy will summarise these duties<\/strong>. It will confirm that everyone in the school knows what to do if a safeguarding concern arises and how to act in the best interest of the child.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Children-at-school-eating-lunch.jpg\" alt=\"Children at school eating lunch\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A thorough safeguarding policy will ensure there\u2019s no uncertainty in the school about what must be done to protect children.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What Should a School Safeguarding Policy Cover?<\/h2>\n<p>Although the specific details vary from school to school, all education settings must cover the same essential safeguarding procedures in their policy. Our template includes all of these with room to tailor where needed.<\/p>\n<h4>The key sections required in a safeguarding policy include the following:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A policy statement. <\/strong>This acknowledges the school\u2019s responsibilities for safeguarding children and summarises what they will do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Summary of safeguarding children<\/strong>, which demonstrates an understanding of how broad safeguarding is and what risks the school will aim to mitigate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legislation and guidance. <\/strong>This section should discuss the various legislative provisions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/safeguarding-children-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statutory guidance documents<\/a> that inform the school\u2019s safeguarding procedures and policy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overview of responsibilities in the school.<\/strong> This section will summarise the duties that staff must fulfil to protect children.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Child protection procedures,<\/strong> which should summarise the actions everyone will take, including whistleblowing, if they identify a safeguarding concern.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How the school will safeguard students who are vulnerable to: <\/strong>extremism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/courses\/safeguarding\/child-sexual-exploitation-awareness-training-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">child sexual exploitation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/courses\/safeguarding\/fgm-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FGM and forced marriage<\/a>, or trafficking, as well as those identified as \u201cat risk\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Children missing in education.<\/strong> The school will acknowledge the importance of monitoring attendance and identifying potential signs of safeguarding concerns in unusual absences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Online safety and teaching safeguarding. <\/strong>This section should identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/internet-safety-ks2-quiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online safeguarding risks<\/a> and what protocol are in place to mitigate these risks, such as filters and monitoring systems. It should also explain how the school\u2019s curriculum includes teaching children about safeguarding risks (i.e. PSCHE lessons).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Looked after children and liaising with virtual schools.<\/strong> These sections will acknowledge the specific issues around safeguarding looked after children and working with virtual schools.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Children with SEN and disabilities,<\/strong> which will recognise the additional safeguarding challenges that SEN and disabled children may face.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How the school will prevent and handle children harming other children, <\/strong>which includes peer-on-peer abuse, sexual abuse, and sexual harassment.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/confidentiality-in-childcare\/\">Confidentiality<\/a> and record keeping.<\/strong> The school must acknowledge how it will comply with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/data-protection-act-compliance-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data protection law<\/a> when handling safeguarding information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Working with parents and others with parental responsibilities. <\/strong>This section should detail the importance of partnering with parents to establish a complete safeguarding process. It should also explain how parents will be made aware of and involved in any safeguarding procedures where possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Health and safety<\/strong>, which identifies additional safety risks in the school. For example, school trips, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/work-experience-guidance-for-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work placements<\/a>, and the presence of visitors and contractors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>OFSTED inspection.<\/strong> Part of OFSTED inspections involves demonstrating that the school\u2019s safeguarding arrangements are effective. The policy should therefore explain that the school is familiar with OFSTED\u2019s current framework.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monitoring and reviewing the policy.<\/strong> Safeguarding guidance is subject to amendments over time and the school may even undergo changes that affect its procedures. The school should state who will review their policy and how often to reflect any changes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key contacts. <\/strong>This section should list the contact information for key safeguarding staff.
