As teachers, by better understanding how memory works and the relationship between memory and learning, we are in a position to design the most effective learning experiences. This article looks at the memory process, different types of memory, and how they relate to learning. Whilst a lot is still unknown, most scientists consider there to be at least four general types of memory.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"accordion\">\n<h3>Sensory Memory<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/down53.png\" alt=\"drop down menu\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" \/><\/h3>\n<div>This is <strong>immediate information taken in by your senses<\/strong>. Sensory memory is incredibly fleeting and generally not retained, unless particular attention is paid to those sensory inputs. For example, it is unlikely that you could recount all the sounds you have heard over the last 30 minutes, but you may recall the doorbell ringing ten minutes ago, if you had to answer it.<\/div>\n<h3>Short-Term Memory<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/down53.png\" alt=\"drop down menu\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" \/><\/h3>\n<div>This type of memory allows you to recall <strong>a limited amount of information for a short time<\/strong>, before it disappears. For example, if you ask a child to remember a string of seven words then repeat them back to you, they will be using their short-term memory. If we pay attention to short-term memories, these can then progress to our long-term memory.<\/div>\n<h3>Working Memory<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/down53.png\" alt=\"drop down menu\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" \/><\/h3>\n<div>This is similar to short-term memory, but in working memory the <strong>information is manipulated<\/strong> to produce new information. The theory of working memory was put forward in 1974 by psychologists, Alan Badderley and Graham Hitch, who proposed that working memory was made up of three components:\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Central Executive (which drives the whole system).<\/li>\n<li>The Visuospatial Sketchpad (which stores and processes visual or spatial information).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Phonological Loop (which stores and processes written and spoken information).\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In 2000, Badderley added a further component &#8211; the Episodic Buffer &#8211; to this model. This is where information, both visual and phonological, is <strong>combined and integrated<\/strong>, along with relevant information from the long-term memory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>You may come across research where the terms \u2018short-term memory\u2019 and \u2018working memory\u2019 are used interchangeably. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3425965\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> has found overlap between them, as a teacher\u00a0 it is useful to make the distinction between the <strong>storage of the short-term memory<\/strong> and the <strong>cognitive process of working memory<\/strong>, which both retains and processes information.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Many children experience difficulties with working memory, which we will explore later in further detail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Long-Term Memory<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/down53.png\" alt=\"drop down menu\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" \/><\/h3>\n<div>Our long-term memory stores most of our memories (if you can recall something which happened more than 30 seconds ago, this will have been retrieved from your long-term memory). We are usually unaware of these memories until we need to call them into our working memories.\u00a0\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>For example, you may know that plants use photosynthesis to generate energy. This information is stored in your long-term memory but it is not continually on your mind. When you need to access that information \u2013 to plan a science lesson or answer a quiz question \u2013 you will call it to your working memory.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"center\",\"id\":54703,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} --><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"296\" class=\"wp-image-54703\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/A-child-thinking.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Some long-term memories are easy to access whilst others are less so.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Long term memory can be further categorised into:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Episodic memory<\/strong> \u2013 memories of events or experiences. These memories are grounded in context and location.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Semantic memory<\/strong> \u2013 our general knowledge about the world. We remember facts or events, not because we have experienced them, but because we learned them. This learning comes from words, symbols and abstract concepts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Procedural memory<\/strong> \u2013 these help us complete everyday tasks such as driving. At first, we have to learn how to do these things, focusing on each specific skill involved, but eventually, as they become part of our procedural memory, they become automatic. Procedural memory rooted in learning through motor skills is often referred to as \u2018muscle memory\u2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reflective memory<\/strong>&#8211; this is emotionally driven. If a child is upset by a peer, they may remember it for a long time, and then if a similar event occurs, reflect back on that initial occurrence.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Some researchers view these as <strong>stages of memory<\/strong>.\u00a0 In such a model, a memory would begin as a sensory memory, then transition to short-term memory, and then may move to a person\u2019s long-term memory (Villines, 2020). One of the goals of teaching is to secure information in a child\u2019s long-term memory, in order that they are able to retrieve it and apply it in different contexts in their lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- close accordion --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#backtotop\"><em>Back to Top<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:separator {\"className\":\"is-style-wide\"} --><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\" \/><!-- \/wp:separator -->\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2>Memory Processes<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Generally, the process of memory is thought to be broken down as follows:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Receiving<\/strong> \u2013 input from your senses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Encoding <\/strong>\u2013the process of changing information into a usable form. Attention, which can be challenging for some children, plays a large part in this stage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Storage<\/strong> \u2013 once information has been encoding, it can be stored.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retrieval <\/strong>\u2013 this is vital, as if you can\u2019t retrieve the memories, they are not much use!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Although the exact mechanism for retrieving memories is not completely understood, it is thought to be a creative process involving piecing different relevant information together rather than simply pulling information out of a store.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"id\":54690,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" class=\"wp-image-54690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Neural-pathways-in-the-brain.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When memories are encoded and stored in the brain, they form neural pathways. Each time the information is retrieved, those pathways are strengthened. The more often you need to access the information, the stronger the pathway, and the quicker it is thought the memory can be retrieved.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Retrieval can be broken down into <a href=\"https:\/\/human-memory.net\/memory-recall-retrieval\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">different types<\/a> and, as a teacher, an awareness of these can help you to plan effective tasks, in order to optimise children\u2019s retrieval processes.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The key elements are:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Recall <\/strong>\u2013simply remembering without any cues. You might ask \u2013 <em>Who was the monarch of England during the reformation?<\/em> If a child is able to answer Henry VIII, they are using recall.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recognition<\/strong> \u2013the process of retrieving previously known information after seeing the thing.\u00a0 In class you might show an image of Henry VIII \u2013 if, once they have seen the picture, a child is able to name him, this is recognition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recollection<\/strong> \u2013piecing together or rebuilding memory.\u00a0 To recollect the details of last year\u2019s Tudor Day, a child might use partial memories, clues (such as photographs) and logic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relearning<\/strong> \u2013 at its name suggests, this is relearning information that has been previously learned but not remembered. A child may not recall the names of Henry VIII\u2019s wives but know that they have learned this fact before. Providing opportunities for relearning is incredibly important, as <strong>relearning strengthens the connections<\/strong> in the brain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p id=\"learning\">Much of what we ask children to do in class involves elements of retrieval, especially as our curriculums seek to build on what has previously been taught. There are many different factors that could influence the effectiveness of retrieval. These include special educational needs and\/or disability (SEND), gender, physical and mental health, activity levels, and even food consumption \u2013 we know the difference eating breakfast can make to a child\u2019s learning potential!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"center\",\"id\":54691,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} --><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" class=\"wp-image-54691\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Children-discussing-their-learning.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#backtotop\"><em>Back to Top<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:separator {\"className\":\"is-style-wide\"} --><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\" \/><!-- \/wp:separator -->\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2>The Relationship Between Memory and Learning\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>There are many different theories and definitions of learning, but an influential one, which underpins the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/education-inspection-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ofsted inspection framework<\/a>, is grounded in memory.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block-quote\">\n<div class=\"block-quote-content\">\n<p>The aim of all instruction is to alter long-term memory. If nothing has changed in long-term memory, nothing has been learned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"quote-citation\">(Kirschner, Sweller, &amp; Clarke, 2006)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>If the goal is to change long-term memory, then as teachers we need to make sure that we are planning opportunities for:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The effective acquisition of new memories, which can be encoded and eventually stored in pupils\u2019 long-term memories.<\/li>\n<li>Repeated retrieval of those memories.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Strategies to be put in place to support children who experience difficulties at any stage of the process.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"center\",\"id\":54702,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} --><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" class=\"wp-image-54702\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Children-explaining-to-each-other.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p>\n<h4>Long-Term Memory and Learning &#8211; Schemas<\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Within the long-term memory, information is stored in a range of <strong>schemas<\/strong>. Schemas are structures that link knowledge and create meaning (Ofsted, 2019). These build up over time, becoming more complex as more is learned. A child in Year 1 may possess quite a simple schema relating to \u2018multiplication\u2019 &#8211; perhaps linked to what they know about addition, and visual images of arrays.\u00a0 As that child progresses through their school journey, that particular schema will become more complex, as other areas of learning are linked to it (times tables, fraction, decimals, formal procedures, algebra, etc.,).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>By designing curriculums and programmes of study that consider how these schemas build and strengthen over time, both within subjects and across the curriculum, the learning potential can be maximised. A spiral curriculum (where elements are revisited regularly) can further optimise retrieval, by purposefully building in time to \u2018forget\u2019 and \u2018retrieve\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"center\",\"id\":54692,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} --><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" class=\"wp-image-54692\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Showing-connections-between-learning.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":4} --><\/p>\n<h4>Working Memory and Learning &#8211; Cognitive Load Theory<\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>As we have seen, before something can enter or alter the long-term memory, the information needs to be encoded and processed by the working memory. Working memory has a limited capacity. If a learning activity places too much pressure on a learner\u2019s working memory (presents too high a cognitive load), then learning will not be able to take place. That information will not be added to their schemas.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Ofsted framework recommends planning activities for children which do not require the learner to use too much working memory capacity, until they have acquired enough knowledge to minimise processing.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In practical terms this might mean including scaffolds to make sure that the activity is concentrated on what the child needs to be learning, and doesn\u2019t carry any additional burden for their working memory.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When teaching speech punctuation, you might at first give them the sentences to punctuate.\u00a0 Having to construct sentences simultaneously would present too high a cognitive load. You might also add some visual aids to further reduce the load, or narrow the focus of the task (i.e., having only the inverted commas missing).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"center\",\"id\":54693,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} --><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" class=\"wp-image-54693\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/A-child-volunteering-an-answer.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Later, when the knowledge is more established and you want them to practise retrieving the information, you would remove some of the scaffolds, until eventually they would have the knowledge to apply all aspects of speech punctuation independently.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p id=\"working\">Essentially you need to be very clear about what \u2018the learning\u2019 is, then, considering the individual child and their current knowledge, plan how to best facilitate that learning. You will already be doing this as part of your everyday good teaching practice &#8211; although you might not explicitly be considering it in light of memory processes or related theories.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#backtotop\"><em>Back to Top<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:separator {\"className\":\"is-style-wide\"} --><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\" \/><!-- \/wp:separator -->\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:heading --><\/p>\n<h2>Why is Working Memory Important?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Working memory is a cognitive process that allows us to use information without losing track of what we are doing.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>If you wrote 15 + 8 = ? on the board for a child to solve, they would need to access, keep in mind, and manipulate, the following information:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What the digits, 1, 5 and 8 mean.<\/li>\n<li>What the digits mean in their place value here.<\/li>\n<li>What + refers to.<\/li>\n<li>What = refers to.<\/li>\n<li>What the ? is asking of them.<\/li>\n<li>What the concept of addition entails.<\/li>\n<li>What their learned methods of addition are.<\/li>\n<li>Which method they should use in this case.<\/li>\n<li>Whether they need to solve this mentally or can use written methods.<\/li>\n<li>How they need to give the answer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, what seems like an incredibly simple classroom task is actually quite complex. As children become more practised at this kind of task, the processing will become quicker and take less toll on the working memory.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Working memory is arguably the most important element of the process to be considered in the classroom. It has even been found to be a better predictor of future academic performance than IQ (Alloway &amp; Alloway, 2014). In addition to formal learning activities, children need to use their working memory to follow all instructions given to them.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>10% of children suffer from working memory problems (<a href=\"https:\/\/thepsychologist.bps.org.uk\/volume-21\/edition-5\/working-memory-classroom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gathercoe, 2008<\/a>) and working memory capacity varies from person to person. If a child\u2019s working memory is overloaded or they are distracted, information can be permanently lost from working memory. Providing visual and verbal information (dual-coding), increases the opportunity for storing that information.<\/li>\n<li>Aid schema formation by explicitly demonstrating patterns, connections and relationships between new and old learning (Willis, 2019). This can be done in many ways and on various levels \u2013 from a spiral curriculum to using concept maps to recapping a previous lesson\u2019s content.<\/li>\n<li>Include interleaved practice \u2013 mix the types of activities and vary the outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>Include regular practice testing (Dunlosky et al, 2013) \u2013 including quizzes or practice assessments. To be most effective this needs to be \u2018low stakes.\u2019\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Encourage a classroom culture of metacognition. Enabling children to reflect on <strong>how <\/strong>they are learning has been <a href=\"https:\/\/educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk\/public\/files\/Publications\/Metacognition\/EEF_Metacognition_and_self-regulated_learning.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shown<\/a> to be a high impact strategy. Make sure they are as short as possible and given in the order they need to be done.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peer teaching<\/strong> \u2013 by explaining new learning to someone else, children are retrieving and rehearsing information, strengthening the neural pathways of that memory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use<\/strong> <strong>written or visual prompts <\/strong>to accompany verbal instructions. Some children may benefit from personal visual scaffolds, such as task management or \u2018now and next\u2019 boards, to ease the load on their working memory. For younger children especially, you can also use action to reinforce learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visual reference material<\/strong> around the classroom \u2013 working walls can be used to represent the steps that need to be taken to successfully complete the activity, and examples of What a Good One Looks Like (WAGOLLs) to show children what they are aiming to produce.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Virtual learning environments<\/strong> \u2013 for setting homework use one with a to do list function.\u00a0 This can help to support pupils\u2019 self-organisation and keep track of what they need to do.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create routines<\/strong> \u2013these can reduce cognitive load, and are especially useful for the tasks that surround the learning (such as gathering equipment or presenting work).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal strategies to aid memory<\/strong> \u2013 explicitly teach children strategies to use independently. This could be notetaking, using graphic organisers, or creating mnemonics. By being exposed to a variety of techniques, children can find what works best for them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Experiences<\/strong> \u2013 plan in some activities so learners can \u2018experience\u2019 the information and reinforce learning through episodic memory. This could include role playing and other drama activities, group activities, or debates. Asking children to dissect a heart after learning about the different chambers reinforces their semantic memory (learning the names and locations of the chambers of the heart) with an episodic memory (the experience of dissecting the heart), in addition to adding a multisensory element.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Verbalising <\/strong>&#8211; regularly allow children to verbalise their tasks \u2013 ask, \u2018What are you doing now?
