The ever-increasing use of digital technology and the effects of automation &#8211; often referred to as the fourth industrial revolution &#8211; are transforming the jobs market and there is growing demand for <strong>&#8216;transferable&#8217; skills<\/strong>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbi.org.uk\/media\/5723\/learning-for-life-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent report from the CBI<\/a> predicts that nine in ten workers will need some form of reskilling by 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, many people worked for the same employer for their entire career. Nowadays, the situation is very different, with life assurance firm LV reporting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-38828581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK workers change jobs on average every five years<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Image-2-resized.jpg\" alt=\"Image showing a pen and notepad with a blank list of skills\" class=\"wp-image-56379\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>As a result, we all need to develop our knowledge and skills throughout our working lives. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/why-is-continuous-learning-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Continuous learning<\/a> has become the norm. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/how-to-upskill-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Upskilling<\/a> (refreshing or developing skills to keep up to date with technological and business developments<sup>1<\/sup>) and <strong>retraining <\/strong>(the process of learning a new vocation or skillset<sup>1<\/sup>) are both essential elements of a successful career.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article examines the importance of transferable skills in today\u2019s rapidly changing jobs market and considers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What we mean by transferable skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Real-life examples that illustrate transferable skills in practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why transferable skills are so crucial for individuals and employers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strategies for developing transferable skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Image-5-resized.jpg\" alt=\"Keep learning\" class=\"wp-image-56401\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-transferable-skills\">What Are Transferable Skills?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Transferable skills are abilities and talents which are relevant to a wide range of different jobs and industries. Given the current pace of change, they are the skills that will be most critical for your future career success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transferable skills can be \u2018hard\u2019 skills (objective abilities that can be taught and measured &#8211; for example, data analysis<sup>2<\/sup>), or \u2018soft\u2019 skills (sometimes referred to as \u2018interpersonal\u2019 or \u2018people\u2019 skills, these are subjective and harder to measure &#8211; for example, teamwork<sup>2<\/sup>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Image-4-resized.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract image showing a person getting ahead\" class=\"wp-image-56395\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagarainstitute.com\/blog\/what-are-transferable-skills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Niagara Institute<\/a>, the top transferable skills which appear consistently in studies and articles are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adaptability and resilience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical thinking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Initiative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resourcefulness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creativity and innovation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leadership.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional intelligence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teamwork and collaboration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It can sometimes be difficult to think of real-life examples that demonstrate our transferable skills, as we often use these skills without realising it. For example, putting yourself in the customer\u2019s shoes when dealing with a complaint is an example of showing empathy, which is a type of emotional intelligence. Initiative is about independently assessing the situation and coming up with solutions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resourcefulness <\/strong>&#8211; this is similar to initiative &#8211; for example, are there times when you\u2019ve been short-staffed and had to think on your feet to find ways to maintain high levels of customer service?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Creativity and innovation<\/strong> &#8211; have you ever suggested changes to an existing process which have led to improvements for the business and its customers?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leadership <\/strong>&#8211; if you\u2019re not in a role where you lead or manage a team, are there other activities which you organise &#8211; for example, team celebrations, company Christmas parties, and fundraising events?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication <\/strong>&#8211; can you think of a situation when you used \u2018active listening\u2019 skills to identify a customer\u2019s wants and needs &#8211; for example, providing high-quality care to service users in a health and social care setting?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Teamwork and collaboration<\/strong> &#8211; can you identify a time when you stepped in and helped a colleague who was struggling to do something?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-transferable-skills-important\">Why Are Transferable Skills Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Job vacancies in the UK are at record levels, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/sep\/14\/uk-payrolls-covid-job-vacancies-hotels-pubs-restaurants-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">number of vacancies exceeding one million<\/a> for the first time since records began in 2001. It can be tempting to think that transferable skills are somehow less valuable than technical skills; however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesta.org.uk\/blog\/transferable-skills-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research shows<\/a> that transferable skills are increasingly attractive to employers and highly sought after.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Image-3-resized.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract image showing skills as central to performance\" class=\"wp-image-56397\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>For employers, transferable skills signal that someone is more likely to make a positive contribution from day one, as they can put their skills to use across a range of job roles and industries. For example, communication skills developed through dealing with customers in a hospitality environment can be applied to a different sector, such as working with children and young people in an education setting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers will still need to provide job-specific training and support &#8211; however, individuals can draw on their prior experiences when they encounter unfamiliar situations and apply transferable skills to deal with challenges they face. This is good for the individual\u2019s own professional development and is also beneficial for employers, as it can improve productivity and reduce training costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/936487\/ESS_2019_Training_and_Workforce_Development_Report_Nov20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK government survey<\/a>, employers spend an average of \u00a32,540 annually on a new trainee, compared with an average of \u00a31,530 on an existing employee. Highlighting your transferable skills during the application process, and providing real-life examples that show where you have demonstrated these skills, will help you to stand out from the crowd. It could even mean the difference between securing your dream job or missing out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/focus\/human-capital-trends\/2017\/learning-in-the-digital-age.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a> also reveals that technical skills are becoming obsolete increasingly quickly with the \u2018half-life\u2019 or longevity of skills falling to around five years. Developing transferable skills such as adaptability and resilience will foster the mindset and attitudes that will enable you to acquire and master new skills throughout your career, regardless of job role or industry.
