Therefore, you are well placed to identify signs and support children who are experiencing abuse. Recognising the signs of this early on is crucial to prevent children from coming to further harm.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Sad-Child-edit.jpg\" alt=\"Upset child alone in classroom\" class=\"wp-image-36867\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>As a result of these circumstances, all schools are expected to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/what-is-a-designated-safeguarding-lead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Designated Safeguarding Lead<\/a>. This person has chief responsibility for listening to concerns, referring them at a higher level, supporting staff and raising awareness of child protection procedures. Rather, there are a number of Acts and statutory guidance documents, and the documents in particular are constantly being amended or updated. <span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">These guide the formation of safeguarding children policies and procedures. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">As a Designated Safeguarding Lead, it is important that you are aware of these, especially if you are partly or fully responsible for creating the safeguarding policy for your school.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-must-have-an-awareness-of-the-following\">You must have an awareness of the following:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Children Act 1989 <\/strong>allocates the responsibility of care to local authorities, courts, other agencies and families to keep children safe. It introduced the concept of child-centred work and promoted the upbringing of children by their families, if possible. It also established the concepts of \u2018children in need\u2019 and \u2018children at risk of significant harm\u2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Children Act 2004<\/strong> is an amendment to the Children Act 1989 following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/273183\/5730.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victoria Climbi\u00e9<\/a> inquiry. The law was updated to include key recommendations as a result of the inquiry. This included making it a requirement that all those who work with children must know how to safeguard them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Education Act 2002<\/strong> outlines the duties and responsibilities for schools in regards to teachers, teaching methods and the curriculum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Every Child Matters 2004<\/strong> is a government guidance document that introduced the &#8216;five key outcomes&#8217; for all children in the UK, which should be reflected in all child protection policies. The five key outcomes are: being healthy, staying safe, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and economic well-being. While the content is still relevant, more recent guidance has been published.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/keeping-children-safe-in-education--2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keeping Children Safe in Education<\/a> \u2013 Statutory Guidance for Schools and Colleges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/working-together-to-safeguard-children--2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Working Together to Safeguard Children<\/a> \u2013 A Guide to Inter-Agency Working to Safeguard and Promote the Welfare of Children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s crucial for you to have an awareness of these guidance documents and to update your knowledge when they are amended. The documents are regularly revisited to make sure they are as up to date as possible, so those who work with children can safeguard them to the best of their abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to learn more about these key documents and the updates they&#8217;ve received over time, you can read our dedicated article on safeguarding guidance here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/keeping-children-safe-in-education-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keeping Children Safe in Education: Key Changes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-responsibilities-of-the-school-s-designated-safeguarding-lead\">Responsibilities of the School&#8217;s Designated Safeguarding Lead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dsls-for-schools-should\">DSLs for schools should:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/courses\/safeguarding\/designated-safeguarding-lead-training-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Level Three Designated Safeguarding Lead Training qualification<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/courses\/safeguarding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Safeguarding Training<\/a>&nbsp;every 2 years and have easy access to the relevant resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that there is an effective child protection policy and staff code of conduct in place. You should provide copies of these to all staff members and make them available for parents and the public to view.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that you annually review and update&nbsp;the child protection policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Act as a source of support, advice and expertise to staff members and help them to understand when it\u2019s essential to report their concerns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep detailed, accurate and secure written records of concerns and referrals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know how local authorities conduct both child protection case and review conferences. You should be able to attend and contribute to these effectively when required to do so.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand the assessment process for providing early help and intervention, including how to contribute towards an inter-agency assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work closely with the local authority and other relevant agencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put in place appropriate safeguarding responses to children who are often absent from education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage a culture of listening to children and taking account of their wishes and feelings in any measures that the school puts in place to protect them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decide whether to make a referral to Children\u2019s Social Care Services when a concern has been made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Writing.jpg\" alt=\"School child writing in their book.\" class=\"wp-image-37000\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The Designated Safeguarding Lead plays an incredibly important role in protecting children from harm.
