Preparing for safeguarding interview questions can help you answer more confidently and demonstrate that you take these responsibilities seriously. In this article, we’ll look at the types of safeguarding questions you’re likely to be asked, why schools ask them and how you can prepare effective answers.

Why Do Schools Prioritise Safeguarding in Interviews?

Safeguarding is one of the most important responsibilities in any school. During the recruitment process, schools aren’t only assessing your teaching ability, they’re also looking for evidence that you understand your legal and professional responsibilities towards children.

Every member of staff has a role to play in protecting pupils from harm and creating an environment where they feel safe, supported and able to learn.

Interview questions about safeguarding help schools understand how you would respond to concerns, whether you’re familiar with current guidance and whether you would contribute positively to the school’s safeguarding culture. They also form part of safer recruitment practices, helping schools appoint staff who are committed to promoting children’s welfare.

Looking for More?

Explore our range of Safeguarding Courses, including Advanced Safeguarding Children, Safeguarding Essentials and Safer Recruitment in Education to build your confidence and understanding.

Understanding Core Safeguarding Principles & Policies

Interviewers often begin with general safeguarding questions to assess your understanding of the principles that underpin child protection in schools. They’re usually looking for evidence that you’re familiar with your responsibilities, understand the importance of following school procedures and recognise that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

Q: What does safeguarding mean to you, and why is it important in this role?

The interviewer wants to understand your knowledge of safeguarding and whether you appreciate its importance within education.

Example answer: “Safeguarding means protecting children from harm, preventing impairment to their health or development and ensuring they grow up in safe and supportive environments. As a teacher, safeguarding forms part of my daily responsibilities. It involves creating positive relationships with pupils, recognising signs that something may be wrong, reporting concerns promptly and following school safeguarding procedures. Every child deserves to feel safe in school and safeguarding helps make that possible.”

Q: What’s your approach to safeguarding children at work?

The interviewer wants to hear how safeguarding influences your everyday practice, rather than simply your knowledge of safeguarding policies.

Example answer: “I believe safeguarding should be part of everything I do. I make sure I build positive, professional relationships with pupils so they feel comfortable speaking to trusted adults. I remain observant for any changes in behaviour or wellbeing, follow school policies consistently and report concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead rather than trying to investigate myself. I also keep my safeguarding training up to date so I’m aware of current guidance and emerging risks.”

Q: How would you help create a strong culture of safeguarding within the school?

Schools want staff who contribute to a positive safeguarding culture across the whole organisation.

Example answer: “Creating a safeguarding culture means ensuring children feel listened to and respected every day. I would model professional behaviour, follow safeguarding procedures consistently and encourage pupils to speak up if they have worries. I’d also work collaboratively with colleagues, attend safeguarding training and contribute to discussions that help improve safeguarding practice across the school.”

Identifying Safeguarding Issues

Teachers are often among the first adults to notice that something may be wrong. Interviewers may ask questions about recognising safeguarding concerns to assess your awareness and professional judgement. They aren’t expecting you to diagnose abuse or investigate concerns, but they do want to know that you can recognise warning signs and respond appropriately.

Q: How would you identify signs of neglect in a child?

The interviewer wants to know whether you can recognise possible indicators of neglect and understand the importance of reporting concerns.

Example answer: “Neglect can present in different ways, so I’d look for patterns rather than isolated incidents. These might include consistently poor hygiene, unsuitable clothing for the weather, persistent hunger, regular tiredness, poor attendance or a noticeable lack of supervision. I understand that these signs don’t necessarily mean neglect has occurred, but they should be recorded and shared with the Designated Safeguarding Lead in line with school procedures.”

Q: Can you describe a time when you identified a safeguarding concern? What did you learn?

The interviewer is interested in your judgement, professionalism and ability to follow procedures.

Example answer: “I noticed that a pupil’s behaviour had changed significantly over several weeks and they appeared withdrawn and anxious. I recorded my observations factually and reported my concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead straight away. The experience reinforced the importance of noticing small changes, keeping accurate records and following safeguarding procedures without making assumptions.”

Q: How would you respond if a child’s behaviour suddenly changed?

The interviewer wants to assess your ability to recognise that behavioural changes can sometimes indicate a safeguarding concern.

Example answer: “I’d approach the situation with curiosity rather than assumptions. I’d continue to observe the pupil, record any concerns factually and consider whether there was a pattern emerging. If I remained concerned, I’d share my observations with the Designated Safeguarding Lead as soon as possible and continue supporting the pupil in the classroom while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.”

Responding to a Disclosure

One of the most common safeguarding interview topics is how you would respond if a child disclosed abuse or another safeguarding concern. Schools want reassurance that you understand the correct procedures and would remain calm in what could be a difficult situation.

Q: How would you respond if a child disclosed abuse to you?

The interviewer wants to know that you understand the appropriate safeguarding process and wouldn’t take actions that could compromise the child’s safety or any future investigation.

Example answer: “If a child disclosed abuse to me, I’d remain calm and listen carefully without interrupting or asking leading questions. I’d reassure them that they’ve done the right thing by speaking to me, but I’d avoid promising to keep the information secret because I have a duty to share safeguarding concerns appropriately. As soon as possible afterwards, I’d make an accurate written record of what was said, using the child’s own words where possible, and report the disclosure immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead in accordance with the school’s safeguarding policy.”

Q: What would you do if a child asked you not to tell anyone about what they’ve disclosed?

The interviewer wants to know that you understand the importance of being honest with the child while following the school’s safeguarding procedures. They also want to see that you can balance empathy with your professional responsibilities.

Example answer: “If a child asked me to keep their disclosure a secret, I’d explain calmly and sensitively that I can’t promise confidentiality because my priority is helping to keep them safe. I’d reassure them that I’d only share the information with the people who need to know, such as the Designated Safeguarding Lead, and that I’d support them throughout the process. I’d listen carefully without asking leading questions, make an accurate written record of what they’d told me using their own words where possible and report the concern immediately in line with the school’s safeguarding policy.”

Scenario-Based Safeguarding Questions to Prepare For

Many teaching interviews include realistic safeguarding scenarios to assess how you would apply your knowledge in practice. The interviewer is usually more interested in your decision-making process than hearing the perfect answer. In most cases, they’ll expect you to prioritise the child’s welfare, follow school procedures and involve the Designated Safeguarding Lead where appropriate. Here are a few examples of what you could be asked:

Scenario 1: A pupil tells you they don’t want to go home but refuses to explain why. What would you do?

Example answer: “I’d listen carefully without pressuring them to provide more information. I’d reassure them that they’ve done the right thing by speaking to me and explain that I may need to share my concerns with the appropriate people to help keep them safe. I’d record the conversation accurately and report it immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.”

Scenario 2: You notice unexplained bruising on a pupil several times over a few weeks. How would you respond?

Example answer: “I’d avoid making assumptions or questioning the child extensively about the injuries. Instead, I’d record my observations factually, including dates and what I’d seen, then report my concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead in line with school procedures.”

Scenario 3: A colleague dismisses a safeguarding concern that you’ve raised. What would you do?

Example answer: “Safeguarding concerns should always be taken seriously. If I believed a concern hadn’t been addressed appropriately, I’d continue following the school’s safeguarding and whistleblowing procedures, ensuring the concern reached the appropriate person. The welfare of the child must always come first.”

For more practice, see our guide on Safeguarding Scenarios and Answers for Education, which explores a wider range of realistic situations and appropriate responses.

Questions to Ask the Interviewer

At the end of the interview, you’ll usually have the opportunity to ask your own questions.
