{"id":7111,"date":"2016-05-03T13:02:18","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T13:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/?p=7111"},"modified":"2024-05-02T14:03:08","modified_gmt":"2024-05-02T13:03:08","slug":"coshh-symbols-meanings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/coshh-symbols-meanings\/","title":{"rendered":"The COSHH Hazard Symbols &#038; Their Meanings"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The GB CLP Hazard Pictograms<\/h2>\n<p>In 2015, the European regulations phased out the old orange CHIP symbols and replaced them with new harmonised classifications for global usage.\u00a0These are part of the internationally agreed system called the \u2018Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>This system was made by the United Nations in 1992, and it intends to make all packaging symbols conform to an internationally agreed criteria (all United Nations countries must conform to it).<\/p>\n<p>The UNECE (the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) stated that <em>\u201cgiven the reality of the extensive global trade in chemicals and the need to develop national programs to ensure their safe use, transport, and disposal, it was recognized that an internationally harmonized approach to classification and labelling\u201d<\/em> was needed.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, <em>\u201conce countries have consistent and appropriate information on the chemicals they import or produce in their own countries, the infrastructure to control chemical exposures and protect people, and the environment can be established in a comprehensive manner.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now, the GB Classification, Labelling, and Packaging Regulations (GB CLP) sets out requirements for the labelling and packaging of chemical substances,\u00a0which includes almost all substances used at work. They also set out the\u00a0warning pictograms signs used on chemical substances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you work with hazardous chemicals, it&#8217;s important for you to know what these nine pictograms mean.<\/strong> They enable a quick understanding of the main hazards that the chemical substance present. These are<\/p>\n<p>These symbols come with a signal word on the packaging, either \u2018danger\u2019 or \u2018warning\u2019 to help alert you to the level of hazard you face.
