But the modern bartender needs to be able to handle all manner of drinks; wines, spirits, non-alcoholic options, coffees, teas, soft drinks. A bit of knowledge across the board to make recommendations or understand what someone means when they ask for a \u2018lager top\u2019 or a \u2018Guiness and black\u2019 is also crucial.<br><br>And it\u2019s not just pubs and clubs you could be working in either. It\u2019s hotels, restaurants, cafes. The downside is the unsociable hours, evenings and weekends, so this is definitely not a career for everyone. But if you\u2019re the kind of person who likes hard work and thrives off a busy atmosphere full of people then it could be the ideal career.<br><br>Just to clarify, when we\u2019re talking about a bartender in this article we\u2019re also referring to a bar server, barback, barman, bar manager, cocktail waiter or any other name you might see advertised when you\u2019re looking for a role behind a bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-responsibilities-of-a-bartender\">Responsibilities of a Bartender<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019ve alluded to, bartenders don\u2019t just pour drinks; they have a variety of responsibilities behind the bar and elsewhere. Attitude, friendliness, and a willingness to learn (and being able to demonstrate this on a CV) can be all you need to get your foot in the door. But taking things to the next level can help if you think this is a career you want to really pursue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>College courses, apprenticeships or other certifications can help you develop the right skills to develop in bartending, giving a more academic understanding of the industry. Anyone can obtain a suitable qualification in bartending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bartender-college-courses\">Bartender College Courses<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A college course in bartending or hospitality provides everything needed to know to start in bartending, including proper techniques and skills, the health and safety procedures and industry knowledge.<br><br>Examples of relevant courses are the City &amp; Guilds Level 1 Award in Professional Food and Beverage Service Skills or the Level 2 Certificate in Professional Food and Beverage Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bartender-apprenticeships\">Bartender Apprenticeships<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Apprenticeships provide hands-on experience of bartending and mixology, as you\u2019d work with an already qualified bartender to develop the practical techniques alongside the classroom stuff. You can also apply to venues directly if there are certain companies you know you\u2019d like to work for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve secured a role and built your experience, the routes to progress are fairly clear.
