As a member of teaching staff, it\u2019s important to be aware that, in some situations, children can abuse other children and your safeguarding responsibilities apply no matter the circumstances. In this article, we\u2019ll outline what child-on-child abuse is, signs of child-on-child abuse to look out for and explain what you can do to help prevent it in your setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-child-on-child-abuse\">What is Child-on-Child Abuse?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Child-on-child abuse is any type of behaviour by a child that has the intention of harming another child, whether physically, emotionally or sexually. It can occur between children of the same age (peer-on-peer abuse), but can also occur in situations where there is an imbalance of power, whether because of a difference in age, maturity or size, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All child-on-child abuse is harmful for both the victim and the perpetrator, regardless of the context and no matter the child\u2019s age or stage of development.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/child-on-child-2.jpg\" alt=\"A child at school using her mobile phone\" class=\"wp-image-79068\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to be aware that <strong>any child can be vulnerable to child-on-child abuse and it can occur in any setting<\/strong>, both inside and outside of the classroom, online or face-to-face and whether supervised or unsupervised by a responsible adult. Note that these signs aren\u2019t always necessarily a cause for concern and don\u2019t always indicate abuse. When assessing a situation you should consider the child\u2019s individual circumstances, use your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/professional-curiosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional curiosity<\/a> and carefully judge the situation before coming to a conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs of child-on-child abuse include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Persistent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/importance-of-school-attendance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">absence from school<\/a> or noticeable disinterest in school activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty engaging with learning, such as withdrawing from lessons or struggling to complete schoolwork to the usual standard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unexplained physical injuries or physical complaints, such as headaches or stomach aches, especially when recurring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/courses\/mental-health\/child-mental-health-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mental health<\/a> or emotional difficulties, such as anxiety, panic attacks or low mood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Becoming withdrawn, overly shy or socially isolated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low self-esteem or lack of confidence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disrupted sleep patterns, including insomnia, nightmares or excessive sleeping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Misuse of alcohol or other substances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Noticeable and sudden changes in behaviour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Behaviour that is inappropriate for the child\u2019s age or stage of development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Displaying abusive or harmful behaviour towards others or oneself, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/self-harm-in-childhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-harm<\/a> or violent outbursts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Power imbalances between the children involved in an incident (e.g. differences in age, size, ability or maturity).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeated attempts by one child to harm or intimidate another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/child-on-child-1.jpg\" alt=\"A young child sat on a park bench\" class=\"wp-image-79069\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-prevent-child-on-child-abuse\">How to Prevent Child-on-Child Abuse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All members of school staff should know what child-on-child abuse is, how to recognise it and&nbsp; what to do when harmful behaviour between children is suspected or confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/keeping-children-safe-in-education-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keeping Children Safe in Education<\/a> guidance states that <strong>child-on-child abuse should never be ignored, accepted, dismissed or downplayed<\/strong> as \u201cjust banter\u201d, \u201cjust having a laugh\u201d, \u201cpart of growing up\u201d or \u201cboys being boys.\u201d This dismissal can lead to an unsafe environment for children and a culture that normalises abusive and unacceptable behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Child-on-child abuse can cause significant, long-lasting trauma for children, as well as physical harm, a decline in mental health, isolation from peers and missing education. Therefore,<strong> schools must have appropriate strategies in place to prevent child-on-child abuse, recognise issues quickly and manage problems effectively.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your setting can help to prevent child-on-child abuse by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Understanding exactly which specific behaviours constitute abuse and documenting these, with examples, in a policy. Remove any ambiguity so staff members know exactly when to have cause for concern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/culture-of-safeguarding-in-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">effective culture of safeguarding <\/a>in your setting where the welfare of children is always promoted and safeguarding practices are key in every aspect of your organisation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being clear and consistent about what is considered unacceptable behaviour and language, so that children and teachers both recognise what is acceptable and what will trigger consequences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring children feel safe and able to share their concerns about child-on-child abuse, knowing they won\u2019t be judged and will be taken seriously.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating an environment where children understand equality, consent and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/teaching-children-about-healthy-relationships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthy relationships<\/a> and feel empowered to make informed choices about their behaviour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching PSHE and Relationships Education appropriately to help children develop their understanding of acceptable and unacceptable behaviours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practicing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/what-is-contextual-safeguarding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contextual safeguarding<\/a> and recognising that child-on-child abuse doesn\u2019t only happen in supervised educational settings, but also at home and within the community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/campaign\/inset-teacher-training-pack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1201\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/screenshots-fb.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79850\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Child-on-child abuse involves harmful behaviour by one child towards another and can occur in various forms, both online and in person. Child-on-child abuse can sometimes be hard to detect as it often occurs in private, but it can have serious emotional, physical and psychological consequences for the children involved.
