It\u2019s more than just looking back on what\u2019s happened at work and is instead about asking deeper questions, challenging your own assumptions and learning how to do things better next time. In this article we\u2019ll explore what critical reflection is, why it matters and how to write a critical reflection more effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-critical-reflection\">What is Critical Reflection?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the workplace, critical reflection is about looking beneath the surface of an experience: instead of just asking <em>what happened? <\/em>in a situation, critical reflection prompts you to ask <em>why did it happen that way?<\/em> and <em>what does this mean for my future practice?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>An example of critical reflection in healthcare<\/strong> would be a nurse reflecting on how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/effective-communication-in-health-and-social-care\/\">communication styles<\/a>, personal assumptions or systemic pressures played a role in a patient\u2019s outcome, and how these could be improved on, instead of just focussing on what the outcome was.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>An example of critical reflection in education<\/strong> would be a teacher using reflection to explore whether their lesson plan met the needs of different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/what-is-kinaesthetic-learning\/\">learning styles<\/a>, rather than just looking at the lesson as a success or failure, and identifying how they could make changes to improve their teaching for next time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>An example of critical reflection in business <\/strong>might be a manager asking how their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/types-of-leadership\/\">leadership style<\/a> impacted team motivation and results for a particular project, rather than simply looking at the results, then considering what they could do to improve their management skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The main difference between simple reflection and critical reflection is that simple reflection tends to stay objective, and is just a recap of what took place, whilst critical reflection goes further and prompts you to question situations more deeply, looking at why things happened as they did.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highspeedtraining.co.uk\/hub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/critical-reflection.jpg\" alt=\"employee writing a critical reflection in the workplace\" class=\"wp-image-80219\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-critical-reflection-important\">Why is Critical Reflection Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone should make time for critical reflection in their role, as the benefits are both personal and professional. To help write a critical reflection, follow these simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Start with the basics<\/strong> &#8211; briefly describe the situation or experience you\u2019re reflecting on. Keep it clear and to the point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Acknowledge your reactions <\/strong>&#8211; think about how you felt during the experience and why. This helps you to become more aware of your emotional responses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dig deeper<\/strong> &#8211; ask yourself the tougher questions: what influenced the outcome? Were any assumptions at play? How did different perspectives shape the situation?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make the connections<\/strong> &#8211; link your experience to relevant theories, frameworks or professional standards.
