They work with people of all ages and can be found across healthcare, social care, education, mental health and community settings. If you’re considering a career in occupational therapy, this guide explains what an occupational therapist does, the qualifications and skills you need to become an occupational therapist and the main routes into the profession.

What is an Occupational Therapist?

An occupational therapist (OT) is a healthcare professional who helps people take part in the everyday activities that are important to them. These might include getting dressed, washing, eating, cooking, working, going to school, looking after children, socialising or taking part in hobbies.

Rather than focusing on a person’s medical condition, an OT considers how their health, disability or other circumstances affect their ability to manage everyday life. They may help someone develop new skills, practise activities, use equipment or make changes to their surroundings.

Occupational therapy is a regulated profession in the UK and ‘Occupational Therapist’ is a protected title, which means you must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to use the title and practise as an occupational therapist.

Responsibilities of an Occupational Therapist

The exact responsibilities of an OT depend on their role, employer and the people they support. However, their day-to-day work may include:

Assessing how a person’s condition or circumstances affects their everyday activities.

Working with people to identify goals and agree on practical ways to achieve them.

Helping people practise everyday activities and develop strategies to make them easier.

Recommending equipment, assistive technology and adaptations.

Advising people on how to use equipment safely.

Suggesting changes to homes, schools or workplaces.

Supporting people to return to work, education or other meaningful activities.

Helping family members and carers understand how to provide appropriate support.

Keeping accurate records and reviewing people’s progress.

Working with other health, care, education and social care professionals.

Types of Occupational Therapists

One of the benefits of a career in occupational therapy is the variety of people and settings you can work with. OTs can support people of all ages, people recovering from illness, injury or surgery, people with physical or learning disabilities, people with mental health difficulties and people experiencing difficulties associated with ageing.

OTs can work in areas including:

Physical health and rehabilitation.

Mental health.

Paediatrics and children’s services.

Learning disabilities.

Older people’s services.

Neurology.

Social care and community services.

Workplace rehabilitation and vocational services.

Education.

Care homes.

Hospitals and NHS clinics.

People’s own homes.

What Qualifications Do You Need to be an Occupational Therapist?

To become an occupational therapist, you need to complete an approved occupational therapy degree or degree-level apprenticeship and then register with the HCPC.

There are various education routes available, depending on your existing qualifications and circumstances:

Undergraduate degree – a full-time Occupational Therapy degree usually takes 3 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 4 years in Scotland. Generally, undergraduate courses require GCSEs including English, maths and often science, alongside Level 3 qualifications such as A levels, a T Level, BTEC or an Access to Higher Education course. Relevant subjects such as biology, psychology, health and social care or other sciences can be useful.

Postgraduate degree – if you already have a degree, you may be able to take a master’s in Occupational Therapy. These courses typically take around 2 years.

Degree apprenticeship – in England, you can study for an Occupational Therapy degree while working for an employer. Apprenticeships combine paid employment with academic study and practical training. If you choose a degree apprenticeship, employers will usually look for Level 3 qualifications or higher, alongside relevant work experience. Shadowing an OT or gaining experience in a health or social care setting can be valuable when applying.

Occupational Therapist Skills

Occupational therapists need a combination of hard skills and soft skills to assess people’s needs, provide practical support and work effectively with other professionals:

Occupational Therapist Hard skills

These are the technical and professional skills you develop through your education, placements and experience. Important hard skills include:

Understanding anatomy, physiology, health conditions and disability.

Carrying out occupational therapy assessments.

Developing person-centred care and treatment plans.

Assessing people’s functional abilities and everyday activities.

Recommending appropriate equipment and adaptations.

Understanding rehabilitation techniques and therapeutic activities.

Keeping accurate clinical records.

Applying professional standards and evidence-based practice.

Understanding safeguarding and health and safety requirements.

Occupational Therapist Soft skills

OTs also need strong interpersonal skills, often called soft skills, because they work closely with people who may be experiencing significant changes or difficulties in their lives. Important qualities for an occupational therapist include:

Empathy and compassion.

Communication.

Active listening.

Patience.

Teamwork.

Creative problem-solving.

Organisation.

Adaptability.

Observation.

The ability to build trust and professional relationships.

How to Become an Occupational Therapist

There are several routes into occupational therapy, but you will need to gain the appropriate qualification, complete the required practical training and register with the HCPC. The following steps can help you to pursue an occupational therapy career:

Step 1: Research the role

Start by finding out what occupational therapists do and the different areas they can work in. Consider whether you would enjoy working directly with people and finding practical solutions to everyday challenges. It can also be useful to speak to an existing occupational therapist or to arrange some work experience or shadowing, as this can give you a better understanding of the profession before committing to a course.

Step 2: Gain the right qualifications

Check the entry requirements for occupational therapy courses at universities you are interested in. If you’re still at school or college, this may mean gaining the required GCSEs and Level 3 qualifications. If you already have a degree, investigate postgraduate occupational therapy courses.

Step 3: Apply for an occupational therapy degree or apprenticeship

Choose a suitable course and check that it meets the requirements for professional registration. The Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) recommends checking whether a programme is RCOT-accredited. If you’re in England, you could also apply for an occupational therapy degree apprenticeship, enabling you to earn a salary while completing your degree and gaining practical experience.

Step 4: Complete your studies and practical placements

Occupational therapy courses combine academic learning with practical experience. Degree apprenticeships also combine studying with on-the-job training. According to the RCOT, apprentices typically spend around 80% of their time in employment and 20% undertaking academic learning.

Step 5: Register with the HCPC

After successfully completing your approved occupational therapy course, you should then apply to register with the HCPC. You must be registered with the HCPC before you can practise using the title of Occupational Therapist.

Step 6: Apply for occupational therapy jobs

Once registered, you can apply for occupational therapy roles in the area of practice that interests you. You may want to work in the NHS, social care, education, charities or private healthcare, for example. As your career develops, you can potentially specialise in a particular area of occupational therapy that interests you.

Occupational therapy can be a rewarding career for people who enjoy helping others, solving practical problems and making a meaningful difference to people’s everyday lives. From healthcare and social care to education and mental health, OTs can work across a wide range of settings and support people of all ages to live as independently as possible.

Further Resources:

Safeguarding Courses

How to Become a Carer

What is Person-Centred Care and Why is it Important?

How to Become a Support Worker

Alternative Careers for Healthcare Professionals

Learn how to become an occupational therapist, a rewarding career involving helping people manage everyday activities when conditions make them difficult, here.

[18
74,76
post-83886","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-safeguarding","tag-career-development","tag-safeguarding-adults
schema_properties_FAQPage_question_answer":null
https://www.highspeedtraining.co.uk/hub/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/HST_HubAd_Safeguarding_01-mobile-2.png
Louise has been writing for the Hub since its creation and has produced articles on a wide range of topics.
