Your role in the team

At High Speed Training you'll be building new features, improving existing code and collaborating with a team of highly driven and motivated individuals. You can break down a complex problem into a solution that provides a rich user experience and implement solutions in a scalable future-proof way. You like to ship iteratively and to consistently improve the code, leaving it better than it was when you first read it.

The CEO of High Speed training is a developer, this means that development is core to the business, developers are appreciated for their creative input, and the importance of investment in development — and avoiding technical debt — is understood.

As a Senior Developer, you'll have a great opportunity to help shape how we work. You’re being brought on board to be a part of the change, not to be a passenger. Your voice will be heard and you will be given ample opportunities to influence the things you're passionate about. We're an open-minded team always open to hearing new ideas and learning from others’ experiences.

Our priorities for 2022 and beyond include:

  • Evolving and maturing our training and assessment tools, producing a first class experience for our Authors and Learners
  • Creating and implementing a new component library, building reusable and maintainable code that can help us produce a best-in-class website for people to find and use our courses
  • Putting accessibility at the forefront of our technologies, striving to create a platform that is fully accessible to everyone that wants to use our platforms

How you'll make an impact at High Speed Training:

  • Directly impact the accessibility and usability of our tools, developing frontends our users will fall in love with
  • Collaborate with our product and design team to implement beautiful functional features in our new products
  • Advocate for data-guided choices, and collaborate with our product team to look into data to understand feature success, confirm bug fixes and spot issues
  • Experiment, iterate and propose solutions to our most difficult technical challenges
  • Work as an advocate and active participant in upskilling and mentoring other members of the team, identifying skills gaps and helping to address these

About the role:

  • Work as part of a multi-skilled squad of Designers, Developers and Product Owners to develop, test, and deploy new features to a market leading website
  • Work in a sprint cadence, able to accurately predict complexity of work undertaken
  • Be the voice of web technologies and guide decisions with the squad using this expertise
  • Working on single page applications built using the latest Angular framework
  • Using css pre-processors such as SASS or LESS and following css methodologies such as BEM and OOCSS
  • Integrating with REST APIs
  • Building your experience and understanding of TDD
  • Contribute to day to day development and stay up to date with new technology

What we're looking for

  • Varied technical experience is key including excellent knowledge of JavaScript (ES6) and other related front-end technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3
  • Exposure to Typescript is not essential as long as there is a willingness to learn
  • Experience using and architecting APIs to build dynamic solutions
  • Proven experience building large scale projects using frameworks such as Angular, VueJs, or React
  • Comfortable using frontend pipeline tools such as npm, grunt, gulp, webpack
  • Exposure to testing frameworks such as Jasmine, Karma, Jest, Protractor
  • Exposure to Cloud Computing Services e.g. AWS, Azure
  • Comfortable using systems such as Jira
  • Exposure to build automation and deployment tools e.g. Teamcity, Octopus Deploy
  • Exposure to at least one server programming language e.g. PHP, Node or C#.
  • Comfortable working with multiple CMS frameworks and building bespoke templates
  • Have a strong sense of modern development culture and agile methodologies

Our people are at the heart of our business and we offer a great environment where we have fun, celebrate success and give you all the tools you'll need for a rewarding career with a team who are passionate about what they do. This is backed by our recent 3 star accreditation, the highest accolade from Best Companies achieved through our ‘world class’ levels of engagement.

We are fully committed to supporting our staff to work in a flexible way that allows them to balance all of their commitments both inside and outside of work. As we move forward and grow we are committed to supporting our teams to work in a way that lets them be at their best, whether that’s on-site or remotely anywhere in the UK, traditional or flexible working hours.

We'll welcome you on-board with 24 days holiday (plus 8 bank holidays) with the opportunity to buy additional holiday if you fancy an extended break, a great annual bonus scheme, the latest mobile phone and contract (that’s on us!), and a staff benefits scheme (with over 250 discounts and offers available).

We also offer free life insurance (which covers 4-times your salary), private medical insurance for you and your family and an attractive pension package.

Having fun both inside and outside work is really important to us so we have a highly motivated social committee who organise regular social events which previously ranged from escape rooms, meals out and bowling to Tough Mudders. They’ve even worked hard to keep the fun going virtually since we’ve all been unable to get together.

Our head office is in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. In response to Covid-19 we are currently operating as a fully remote business. We are following government guidelines closely and all employees are working from home wherever possible until further notice. We are open to applications no matter where you are located in the UK and we have moved our interview and onboarding process to be fully virtual.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of age, disability, race, religion or belief, gender reassignment, marital and civil partnership status, pregnancy and maternity, sex or sexual orientation.

Having been awarded the prestigious accolade from Best Companies for our ‘world class’ levels of engagement, we recently secured our place as the 3rd best company to work for in the Education and Training sector and as the 13th best mid-sized company to work for in the UK and we have no plans to stop there.
