Who Should Take This Electrical Safety Course?
An employee is 20 times more likely to be killed when working with electricity than
in other types of accidents. The Health and Safety Executive estimate that there
are around 1000 electricity-related accidents a year.
The course is aimed at any workers who are involved at any stage of the planning
and undertaking of electrical work. Written by a specialist team led by a British
Safety Council member with over 30 years’ experience as a health and safety professional,
this course is designed for any workers who are required to work with electricity
as part of their job.

Content
The course has the following sections:
- Introduction to Electrical Safety – Why is electrical safety important? The
causes of accidents and injuries. Injuries from electricity.
- Assessing the Risk – What is a risk assessment? Five steps to undertaking
an electrical risk assessment.
- Eliminating and Reducing the Risk 1 – Safe installations. Electrically powered
portable equipment. Safety devices. Working near electricity. Avoiding underground
cables.
- Eliminating and Reducing the Risk 2 - Overhead power lines. Potentially explosive
atmospheres. Work on equipment, machinery or installations. Maintaining electrical
equipment.

Assessment
The online assessment is taken on completion of the training material. You will be asked 15 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 75%. The answers are marked automatically so that you’ll instantly know whether you passed. If you don't pass don't worry! You can take the test as many times as you need with no extra charge.
Duration
Approximately 1 hour to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.
Do You Comply With Electricity at Work Regulations?
Employers have duties under the following legislation:
- The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 - main set of regulations covering electrical safety in the workplace
- Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR)
- The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
- The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
Employers have a duty to train their employees and carry out a risk assessment of all workplace hazards, including electrical installations, equipment and work near electricity. All electrical wiring and equipment, generators and battery sets and everything connected to them must be properly installed and maintained by qualified staff.
