Often used during construction and groundworks, CAT and Genny are a two-piece electronic system used to locate and identify buried services. Their use minimises the risk of any potential service strikes. Strikes can result in severe injuries, fatalities and extensive costs in damage.
This CAT and Genny training course provides comprehensive theoretical instruction on how to locate, trace and identify buried services and prevent service strikes, in line with key health and safety requirements and guidance including HSG47. Taking our training will support you in keeping yourself and those around you safe and reducing the risk of harm. Practical competence must be demonstrated separately through hands-on training and assessment.

Tens of thousands of underground utility strikes occur each year and can lead to severe injuries, fatalities, service disruption and extensive costs in damage. Striking buried electricity cables, gas pipes, water mains, sewers or communication services can cause electrocution, fires, explosions, flooding and other serious consequences. Appropriate training is therefore essential for anyone who needs to locate, trace or identify buried services before excavation
This CAT and Genny course explains how to locate, trace and identify buried services using plans, visual inspections and locating equipment. The training supports safe excavation and helps reduce the risk of harm, costly repairs and project delays. Practical competence must be demonstrated separately through hands-on training and assessment.
Module 1: Introduction to Underground Services
This module introduces common buried services, the risks associated with utility strikes and the checks required before excavation. It explains how plans, visual inspections, CAT and Genny equipment, sondes and trial holes are used to locate and identify services, and covers PUWER, Permits to Dig, HSG47, safe excavation and emergency procedures.
Module 2: Understanding Cable Avoidance Tools (CATs)
This module explains how manual and automatic CAT equipment works and how electromagnetic signals are used to locate buried services. It covers AC and DC, Power, Radio, Genny and Avoidance modes, common detection limitations, safety alerts, calibration and health checks, visual inspections, GPS and data logging.
Module 3: Understanding the Genny
This module explains how Genny and transmitter equipment applies traceable signals to buried services. It covers common frequencies and the induction, nulling, direct connection and signal clamp methods, as well as using sondes and conductive tracing reels to trace non-metallic services.
Module 4: Application
This module brings locating and tracing principles together in practical examples. It explores operator, equipment, service and environmental limitations, how to interpret signal strength and tone, best-practice scanning and pinpointing techniques, manual and automatic CAT operation, locating sondes and estimating service depth.
Once you have completed all of the online training material, you will be able to take the online assessment. The assessment consists of 15 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked instantly so you will know whether you have passed as soon as you finish.
If you don’t pass the assessment you can review the course material and take the assessment again as many times as necessary at no extra charge.

Is there a time limit on completing the course?
No, we want our courses to work around you so there’s no time limit in which you must complete the training after making a purchase. You can also split your training over as many different sessions as you wish, as course progress is saved as you make your way through the training. You’re free to learn entirely at your own pace.
