Falls from height are a leading cause of workplace injury, and the reliability of PPE is critical. Regular detailed checks are essential in identifying subtle damage that could cause equipment to fail.

This Safety Harness Inspection course is designed for anyone in any industry whose role involves conducting detailed checks of fall arrest PPE, including users, storepersons and supervisors. The course equips you with the knowledge and skills needed to perform detailed checks of key work at height PPE to keep yourself and others safe when working at height. Through this training, you’ll learn how to carry out detailed checks of full-body, fall arrest safety harnesses, shock-absorbing lanyards and work at height helmets. You’ll learn about common causes of damage, how to recognise when equipment is no longer fit for use and what to do when this happens.

This course doesn’t provide qualified competent person certification needed for thorough inspections under the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Why take this course?

Work at height PPE is designed to minimise the risk of injury and keep you or your teammates safe in the event of a fall. However, this is only possible if all components are in good condition. If just one piece of equipment is damaged, the entire system can fail, making regular, detailed checks an important step in ensuring that all PPE is safe to use.

This Safety Harness Inspection course provides you with a comprehensive guide for carrying out detailed checks of key work at height PPE. It gives you the knowledge to move beyond daily user checks to identify subtle defects, signs of damage and contamination that could compromise your safety or the safety of others. It covers the inspection process for safety harnesses, shock-absorbing lanyards and work at height helmets, as well as the correct cleaning, storage and quarantine procedures.

Module 1: The Fundamentals

This module breaks down the basics of the fall arrest system, showing you how harnesses, lanyards and helmets all work together to keep you or your team safe when working at height. You’ll learn the difference between quick user checks and the deeper detailed checks needed to spot subtle damage. It also covers the impact of harsh environments, the importance of proper cleaning and storage, and why the right inspection environment is key.

Module 2: The Detailed Check Process

This module provides a step-by-step guide to conducting a methodical, tactile and visual check of each piece of equipment. You'll learn exactly what to look and feel for, and see visual examples of common types of damage. It also explains the danger of equipment modifications and why using a checklist or log keeps the whole team protected.

Once you have completed all of the online training material, you will be able to take the online assessment. The assessment consists of 15 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked instantly, so you will know whether you have passed as soon as you finish.
