Module 1: Introduction

What is dementia and can it be prevented? Dementia statistics, the types of dementia and the people most at risk.

Module 2: Symptoms of Dementia

The role of a carer, memory loss, disorientation, personality change, difficulties with everyday tasks and words and how dementia progresses.

Module 3: Diagnosis

Contacting a doctor, early diagnosis, how dementia is diagnosed, contacting a support group, living and work arrangements, driving, legal and financial affairs and treatment for dementia.

Module 4: Caring for Someone with Dementia

Remaining independent, managing relationships, memory aids, everyday life, diet and general health and getting further help and support.

Module 5: Home Adaptations for People with Dementia

Introducing changes, adaptations for the kitchen, bathroom, living space and stairways, lighting, warmth, specialist equipment and further contacts.

The online assessment is taken on completion of the training material. You will be asked 10 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked automatically so you will instantly know whether you have passed. If you don't pass don't worry! You can take the test as many times as you need with no extra charge.

This course is suitable for carers who are looking after a person with dementia or who wish to learn more about the condition. The course is suitable for learners of all levels, including those who work in care home settings, medical settings or simply relatives who are looking after a family member with the condition at home. The course is designed as an introduction to the topic of dementia and so no pre-requisite training or knowledge is needed.

Dr. Laura Booi is a Senior Atlantic Fellow at the Global Brain Health Institute, Trinity College, Dublin, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Dementia Research, Leeds Beckett University. She holds a PhD in Gerontology, a Masters in Health Psychology, and a BA (Hons) in Psychology.

Over the past fifteen years, Dr. Booi has secured over £3.2 million for brain health and dementia research as both a Principal and Co-Investigator. Her key awards include the Alzheimer’s Research UK Inspire Fund (2023) for public engagement and the UKRI Catalyst Award (2021) for leadership in ageing and brain health.

Her expertise covers brain health and dementia research, qualitative methods, policy analysis, public engagement and health equity.

How do I access the training?

All of our training is done within your web browser - there are no apps to download or software to install.

After picking the courses you need and completing your purchase, you will receive a confirmation email. To access our courses yourself or to distribute them to others you just need to click the ‘Get Started’ button within the email and select which option you want. You will then be able to add the course(s) into an existing account, or create a new account.


Can I buy training for my team?

Of course just add the amount of courses you need and follow the purchase process. Please do be aware that it is one course per learner so they will all need their own course.

Can I access the training material after I have completed my course?

Yes. You can use your username and password to log in and revisit the training material as many times as you like, even after completing the course.


Is there a time limit on completing the course?

No, we want our courses to work around you so there’s no time limit in which you must complete the training after making a purchase. You can also split your training over as many different sessions as you wish, as course progress is saved as you make your way through the training. You’re free to learn entirely at your own pace.
