Fire doors are a critical element of your building's compartmentation system, crucial for limiting the spread of fire and smoke and protecting escape routes. As the person conducting routine checks, your ability to identify, record and report defects is essential for maintaining your organisation’s legal compliance and ensuring safety.
This course provides the awareness required to conduct non-specialist, in-house checks, ensuring the integrity of fire doors in your workplace. It equips you with the knowledge to understand why inspections are required, the types of fire doors you might see, and how to use a simple 6-step approach to check your fire doors are functional and compliant. Through this training, you’ll learn about the legal duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order and Fire Safety Act 2021, how to inspect key components, identify and report common defects, and what action to take following a fire door inspection.
It is suitable for anyone responsible for carrying out fire door inspections in non-domestic premises, including but not limited to, Responsible Persons (RPs), building managers, caretakers, site managers and facilities managers.

Fire doors are critical safety components designed to maintain fire compartmentation and protect escape routes. When a door is damaged or non-compliant, it fails to perform its vital function, compromising the building's overall fire safety strategy and putting people at risk.
This Fire Door Inspection Awareness course provides an understanding of how to maintain fire doors through routine checks, supporting legal compliance in your workplace and helping to keep people safe. It covers the role of fire doors in compartmentation, the six-step approach to in-house inspections, identifying common defects across components, and the clear, professional reporting required to meet the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.
This module explains compartmentation and the critical role fire doors play as part of passive fire protection (PFP). You'll cover the legislation that mandates routine checks and understand the types of fire doors you may see in your workplace, including differences in rating, configuration and certification.
This module details a practical, 6-step guide for your fire door inspections. It covers key components, common defects and compliance issues with fire doors, as well as how to record and report fire door inspection findings clearly and professionally. It also provides guidance on what to do if your concerns aren’t taken seriously.
Once you have completed all of the online training material, you will be able to take the online assessment. The assessment consists of 10 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked instantly, so you will know whether you have passed as soon as you finish.
If you don’t pass the assessment, you can review the course material and take the assessment again as many times as necessary at no extra charge.
This Fire Door Inspection Awareness course is suitable for anyone responsible for carrying out fire door inspections in non-domestic premises, including but not limited to, Responsible Persons (RPs), building managers, caretakers, site managers, and facilities managers. This is an awareness course and doesn’t provide the full competence required for a formal, qualified Fire Door Surveyor role.
