Breakfast clubs are a great way to ensure that a child receives a healthy breakfast at the start of the school day. Missing breakfast can negatively affect a child’s energy levels and concentration, impacting their ability to focus and therefore learn. All children should feel welcome at a school breakfast club and have access to the benefits that it can offer. However, for many children, this is not the case. 1 in 13 children in the UK live with a diagnosed food allergy and a lack of awareness about allergens can make these children feel unsafe and excluded.

This comprehensive training, created in partnership with Natasha’s Foundation, will teach you how to run a food allergy safe breakfast club to ensure that all children feel safe and included. By taking this course you will learn how to avoid allergenic contamination, how to identify the 14 named food allergens and gain an in-depth understanding of how to run a food allergy-safe breakfast club.

  • Use key documentation alongside hygiene and food segregation practices to prevent allergenic-contamination before, during, and after breakfast service.
  • Identify the 14 named food allergens, and interpret food labelling and legal requirements to determine whether a food is safe to serve.

Module 1: Conducting a Food Allergy-Safe Breakfast Club

This module demonstrates setting up the physical space and verifying food safety information before service, maintaining active supervision during the busy breakfast rush, and resetting the room afterwards, including cleaning surfaces, storing food safely and clearing away equipment so the space is ready for the rest of the school day.

Once you have completed all of the online training material, you will be able to take the online assessment. The assessment consists of 5 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked instantly, so you will know whether you have passed as soon as you finish.

If you don’t pass the assessment, you can review the course material and take the assessment again as many times as necessary at no extra charge.

This course is suitable for anyone working in a school breakfast club, including teachers, support staff, cooks, and volunteers.

The Foundation also works with government, healthcare bodies and industry to improve allergy safety standards.

Through its educational work, the Foundation provides independent, evidence-based guidance to protect children with food allergies from life-threatening allergic reactions, including within schools and other educational settings.

How do you make your courses?

This approach is built on the widely recognised Double Diamond framework, adapted to ensure that every course is engaging, effective and rooted in the learner's reality.

We collaborate with experts in the field to help pinpoint the specific barriers preventing safe or ideal behaviour. We identify opportunities for the course to solve these barriers, increasing the likelihood that training will translate into real-world action.

By training with us you can be confident that you are taking a course that has gone through rigorous internal reviews and external approvals to truly be built with the learner in mind.
