Course in action

Why take this course?

It’s a common and dangerous misconception that terrorist attacks only happen to high-profile landmarks or major cities. In reality, terrorism can strike anywhere, and many organisations have historically overlooked this specific risk, leading to a lack of suitable protection for their visitors and staff. Martyn’s Law changes this by making public protection a legal requirement for certain venues and events. Understanding your duties now is essential for ensuring that if the unthinkable happens, you and your team are prepared to act decisively to save lives and that your organisation is fully compliant with Martyn’s Law.

This Martyn’s Law course explains your legal responsibilities, teaching you how to identify if your venue is in scope of the law and, if so, whether it falls into the standard or enhanced tier. By completing this training, you’ll learn the essential emergency procedures you need in place for security, including your communication plan for a security incident. It also covers how to build a vigilant security culture that prepares your organisation for a security incident when the law is officially enforced.

As an awareness level course, this training provides the essential knowledge required for the upcoming implementation of the law. Depending on your specific organisational structure or high-level security responsibilities, certain roles may require further, more specialised training.

Module 1: What is Martyn's Law?

This module introduces the fundamentals of Martyn’s Law and helps you determine if a venue or event is in scope. You’ll explore how attendance and entry conditions determine whether a premises falls into the standard or enhanced tier, and identify exceptions and exemptions that may apply. You will also learn about the role of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) as the regulator and the responsible person.

Module 2: How can you prepare?

This module covers practical steps for protecting your site, including developing public preparedness procedures, implementing proportionate physical security measures and building a strong security culture. You’ll learn how to refine emergency plans for evacuation, invacuation and lockdown while ensuring staff are trained to act with confidence. A "Choose Your Path" section offers education-specific advice on school lockdowns, managing bomb threats and supporting students.

Once you have completed all of the online training material, you will be able to take the online assessment. The assessment consists of 10 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked instantly, so you will know whether you have passed as soon as you finish.

If you don’t pass the assessment, you can review the course material and take the assessment again as many times as necessary at no extra charge.

This course is designed for venues or events that have entry conditions in the UK, and are reasonably expected to host 200 or more people at once, including both staff and visitors. Whether you are the designated responsible person or a member of the wider team, this training will help you understand your role in keeping people safe under Martyn’s Law. This law will affect many sectors, including retail, hospitality, entertainment, travel and healthcare, as well as education settings and places of worship. While the law won't be formally enforced until 2027 at the earliest, the course is built to help you bridge the gap between your current health and safety procedures and the new terrorism-specific requirements, ensuring your workplace is prepared and your team feels empowered to act.
